OKX Review 2026:
Is It Safe, What Does It Cost, and Who Is It For?
OKX is a large global crypto exchange with a self-custody Web3 wallet in the same app. It suits active traders and on-chain users who manage their own security, but it is not available everywhere, and its account structure and wallet carry risks beginners should understand first.

Is OKX worth using in 2026?
- Safety: Recurring, self-verifiable proof-of-reserves reports and standard protections (2FA, withdrawal whitelists, anti-phishing code) reduce custody risk but cannot remove it.
- Availability: OKX.com does not serve US residents; a separate US offering exists. Check the official site for your region.
- Fees: Regular-tier spot fees were 0.08% maker and 0.10% taker on October 20, 2026. Futures and withdrawal fees vary.
- Web3 Wallet: The exchange account is custodial; OKX Wallet is self-custody, so a lost seed phrase or malicious approval cannot be reversed.
- Balance shows 0? Deposits usually land in the Funding account and must be transferred to the Trading account first.
Is OKX safe and legit in 2026?
OKX is a legitimate, long-running exchange that publishes proof-of-reserves reports and offers mainstream account-security tools. Like any centralized exchange, though, it holds your assets for you, so "safe" depends on the company staying solvent and on how well you secure your own account. No exchange can guarantee that funds will never be lost, frozen or delayed.
What security features does OKX offer to protect my account?
OKX offers the account protections you would expect from a major exchange. Menu names can differ between the app and the website:
- Two-factor authentication (2FA): An authenticator app or passkey is stronger than SMS, which attackers can hijack with a SIM swap.
- Anti-phishing code: A personal code that OKX includes in genuine emails. An "OKX" email without it is a red flag.
- Withdrawal address whitelist: Withdrawals can only go to addresses you approved in advance, which slows down anyone who gets into your account.
- Device management and security holds: Remove unknown devices; OKX may pause withdrawals after a password or 2FA change, which protects you if someone else made it.
None of these protect you until you switch them on. At a minimum, use authenticator-app 2FA, an address whitelist and a unique password from a password manager.
What does OKX's proof of reserves actually prove?
OKX's proof of reserves (PoR) shows that, at a given snapshot, the exchange held on-chain assets at least equal to the customer balances in the report, and it lets you check that your own balance was included. The PoR page says OKX keeps a 1:1 reserve of account assets and publishes reports periodically. When we checked on October 20, 2026, the page banner mentioned its 48th report.
The official page says the method combines a Merkle tree with zk-STARK zero-knowledge proofs. Logged-in users can check:
- Inclusion: that your balance is a leaf in the published Merkle tree, using OKX's open-source validator.
- Liabilities: the zk-STARK proof is designed to show the liability total was not reduced with hidden negative balances.
- Wallet ownership: that published reserve addresses hold the reported balances on-chain.
What PoR does not prove matters just as much. It is a snapshot, it omits the company's other liabilities, it is not a full audit, and assets held by third-party custodians must be verified with those custodians. Treat PoR as a transparency signal, not a guarantee. The methodology is on the official OKX Proof of Reserves page.
Has OKX had regulatory problems?
Yes, and you should weigh that history. In February 2025, the US Department of Justice announced that Aux Cayes FinTech Co. Ltd., an OKX operating entity, pleaded guilty to operating an unlicensed money transmitting business serving US customers and agreed to pay more than $504 million. OKX has since licensed or registered entities in several jurisdictions and launched a US offering. Check which OKX entity would hold your account (your region's terms name it) and whether your local regulator lists it.
How do I avoid fake OKX websites, apps and support agents?
Check any phone number, email, website or social account that claims to be OKX with OKX's official channel verification tool before you trust it. Impersonation is one of the most common ways exchange users lose money, and it usually starts with a "support agent" who contacts you first.
- Never share secrets: Real OKX staff will not ask for your password, 2FA codes or Web3 Wallet seed phrase.
- Use a bookmark: Type okx.com yourself, and install the app only from store listings linked on okx.com, not from ads or direct messages.
- "Move your funds to a safe account" is a scam script: Stop and verify through the official app.
Run the check on the official OKX channel verification page. If you buy crypto from other users with local currency, also read our P2P safety guide.
Is OKX available in the US or in my country?
OKX.com, the global platform, does not serve US residents. People in the United States are directed to a separate OKX offering with its own terms, which may not include every product on the global site. If you live in the US, start from the official OKX website and use the US version, not the global exchange.
The terms of service we checked on October 20, 2026 named a US entity, OKX Inc., serving users in "approved operating locations" within the United States, so availability can differ by state and the product range, especially derivatives, differs from the global platform. We have not tested the US offering in depth, so this review does not cover it.
Outside the US, availability is a patchwork:
- Restricted jurisdictions: The terms say not every service is offered in every market and point to a list of restricted locations in OKX's risk and compliance disclosures. Some countries are excluded entirely; others lose specific products.
- Regional entities: In some regions, including the European Economic Area, a local OKX entity onboards you, with its own products, protections and verification requirements.
- Product limits: Derivatives, leverage, earn products and some tokens are restricted in many places even where spot trading is allowed.
The reliable check is the okx.com sign-up page for your country of residence. Always register with your real country and identity. Using a VPN or false details to get around restrictions breaks the terms of service and can lead to a frozen account, lost access to funds and legal consequences. We do not give advice on bypassing geographic or sanctions restrictions.
What are OKX's trading fees in 2026?
For regular users, OKX's spot trading fee was 0.08% for maker orders and 0.10% for taker orders when we checked the official fee page on October 20, 2026. VIP tiers get lower rates. Futures, options and withdrawals each have their own fee schedules.
What is the difference between maker and taker fees on OKX?
A maker order adds liquidity to the order book, usually as a limit order that doesn't fill straight away. A taker order removes liquidity: a market order, or a limit order that matches immediately. At the regular-user rates above, buying $1,000 of BTC with a market order costs about $1.00 in trading fees (0.10%), while a resting limit order that fills later costs about $0.80 (0.08%). Spread and slippage are extra costs that don't appear in the fee line.
How do OKX VIP fee tiers work?
OKX sets your fee level from either your assets on the platform or your 30-day trading volume. On the schedule we checked, the regular tier applied below $100,000 in assets or $1,000,000 in 30-day spot volume, and VIP 1 started at those thresholds. Most retail users stay on the regular tier. The page also has separate tabs for stablecoin pairs, some local-currency pairs and "special fee pairs", so check the rate for the pair you plan to trade.
What are OKX's futures, deposit and withdrawal fees?
Futures fees are on the Futures tab and differ from spot. Perpetuals also carry funding payments, which over time can exceed the trading fee. If you are new to derivatives, read our spot vs futures guide first.
Crypto withdrawal fees depend on the coin and network; OKX shows the current fee on the withdrawal screen. A cheaper network only helps if the receiving wallet supports that exact network, because sending on the wrong one can mean losing the funds. Fiat deposit and card costs depend on your country and payment provider. Always confirm current rates on the official OKX fee page, because figures on any review site, including this one, can go out of date.
How do I sign up for OKX, and where does the referral code go?
To open an OKX account, you choose your country or region of residence, register with an email or phone number, enter a verification code, set a password and complete identity verification. Through our link, the referral code is applied automatically.
What are the OKX registration steps?
- Step 1, select your location: Choose where you actually live and tap Next. This decides which OKX entity and products you see.
- Step 2, enter your email or phone number: It becomes your login and receives security alerts, so use a well-secured account.
- Step 3, enter the one-time code and create a password: Type the code only into the official page or app, and use a unique password from a password manager.
- Step 4, secure the account: Turn on authenticator-app 2FA and set an anti-phishing code before depositing.
- Step 5, verify your identity: Complete KYC (next section) to unlock deposits, trading and withdrawals.
Where do I enter an OKX referral code, and can I add it later?
If you open OKX through our registration link, the link itself attaches our referral code, OK6667. If you sign up another way, the form may show an optional referral or invite code field. A referral code generally cannot be added after the account is created, so decide before you finish registering.
The sign-up page advertises new-user rewards with "terms apply". Eligibility and amounts depend on your region and OKX's current campaign terms, so we cannot promise any particular bonus. If you use our link, we earn a commission at no extra cost to you.
What KYC does OKX require, and how long does verification take?
Most users must complete identity verification (KYC) before depositing, trading or withdrawing on OKX, typically a government-issued photo ID plus a live selfie or face scan, with extra information in some regions. Many applications are reviewed automatically and finish quickly, but OKX does not guarantee a timeframe and manual reviews take longer.
- What you usually need: legal name, date of birth and country of residence; a valid passport, national ID card or driving licence; and a facial liveness check.
- What may be added: proof of address or questions about occupation and source of funds, more often for higher limits, larger deposits or certain regions.
- Common causes of delay or rejection: blurry or cropped photos, an expired document, a name mismatch, or a residence country that doesn't fit your document.
- After approval: OKX can still request more information later. Reply only through the official app or website.
Use good lighting, photograph the whole document and enter your name exactly as on the ID. KYC is an anti-money-laundering requirement: never use someone else's documents or let anyone verify an account for you. Such accounts are often frozen, and "verified accounts for sale" are a known fraud pattern.
Why does my OKX balance show 0? Funding vs Trading account explained
If your deposit arrived but your trading balance shows 0, the funds are most likely in your Funding account; transfer them to your Trading account to place orders. This is a quick in-app transfer, not an on-chain transaction.
As OKX's structure stood when we checked:
- Funding account: where deposits and P2P purchases usually land, and where withdrawals are made from.
- Trading account: used for spot, margin and derivatives orders; depending on account mode, balances can also act as collateral across products.
- Earn products: shown separately and may not be instantly available.
To fix a zero balance, open Assets, choose Transfer, move the coin from Funding to Trading and refresh. If the deposit isn't in Funding either, check your deposit history: it may still be awaiting network confirmations, or it may have been sent on an unsupported network or without a required memo, which needs support.
OKX has changed this structure before, so if your app shows a single account, follow the app. In advanced account modes, Trading-account balances can serve as margin, so a losing leveraged position can eat into assets you thought you were simply holding.
What is the OKX Web3 Wallet, and how is it different from my exchange account?
OKX Wallet, often called the OKX Web3 Wallet, is a self-custody wallet: you control the keys, not OKX, so you can use DApps and DeFi directly, but nobody can recover funds if you lose your seed phrase or approve a malicious transaction. Your exchange account is custodial: OKX holds the assets and you sign in with a password and 2FA.
| Feature | OKX exchange account | OKX Web3 Wallet |
|---|---|---|
| Who controls the assets | OKX (custodial) | You (self-custody) |
| Sign-in and recovery | Email or phone, password and 2FA; OKX support can help recover access | Seed phrase or private key, depending on wallet type; losing it usually means losing the funds |
| KYC | Required for most features | Not needed to create a wallet; some connected services may require it |
| Typical use | Order-book trading, buying with fiat, futures, earn products | DApps, DEX swaps, NFTs, staking and bridges on supported chains |
| Main risks | Exchange insolvency, account freezes, account takeover | Phishing, malicious approvals, fake tokens, smart-contract bugs |
| Can mistakes be reversed? | Internal issues can sometimes be fixed by support | No. On-chain transactions are final |
| Covered by OKX proof of reserves? | Yes, for the customer balances in the report | No. The assets sit on-chain in your own addresses |
The appeal is convenience: one app, quick moves between exchange and wallet. That is also the risk, because the two look alike but follow completely different rules. We did not test every advertised chain.
How should I back up my OKX Wallet seed phrase?
Write your seed phrase on paper or metal and store it offline. Never type it into a website, chat, cloud note or screenshot. Anyone who has it can empty the wallet, and OKX cannot restore it for you.
- Back it up immediately: Then test a restore with a small amount before funding the wallet properly. If the amount matters, keep a second copy away from home.
- Understand other backup options: Depending on wallet type, OKX Wallet may offer alternatives such as an encrypted cloud backup. Know what you are trusting before enabling them.
- Use cold storage for savings: For larger long-term holdings, a hardware wallet is safer than any hot wallet. See our cold wallet guide.
What are DApp token approvals, and how do I revoke them?
A token approval lets a smart contract move a specific token out of your wallet, sometimes in unlimited amounts, until you revoke it. DEXs and DeFi apps need approvals, but a malicious or later-hacked contract can use an old approval to drain that token without asking again.
- Read before you sign: Check the contract, token and amount. Be wary of "unlimited" approvals and of signatures you don't understand, including permit-style off-chain signatures.
- Revoke what you no longer use: Look for an approvals or authorizations manager in your version of OKX Wallet, or use an independent tool such as Revoke.cash or a block explorer's token approval checker. Each revocation is an on-chain transaction with a network fee.
- Separate wallets by purpose: Try new DApps from one "hot" address and keep savings at another.
How do people lose crypto from Web3 wallets?
Most Web3 wallet losses happen because the user is tricked into signing something, not because the wallet is hacked. The patterns repeat:
- Malicious approvals and drainer sites: A fake mint, claim or swap page requests an approval or signature that hands over your tokens.
- Fake airdrops: Unexpected tokens appear with a website name in their label, and the "claim" site is a drainer. Ignore tokens you didn't expect.
- Phishing and impersonation: Fake OKX Wallet download pages, sponsored search ads, cloned DApp sites, and "support" accounts on Telegram or Discord that ask for your seed phrase.
- Address poisoning: Tiny transfers from look-alike addresses, hoping you copy the wrong one from your history. Always check the full address.
OKX Wallet warns about some known malicious contracts and tokens, but no system catches everything. If you signed something harmful, revoke the approval and move remaining funds to a new wallet with a new seed phrase.
OKX vs Binance vs Coinbase: which exchange should you choose?
Choose OKX for a global exchange with a strong built-in Web3 wallet, Binance for the broadest global market coverage, and Coinbase if you live in the US or want simplicity from a publicly listed, US-regulated company. The right choice is the one legally available where you live.
| Feature | OKX | Binance | Coinbase |
|---|---|---|---|
| US residents | Not on OKX.com; separate US offering | Not on Binance.com; Binance.US is a separate platform | Yes, US-based company |
| Self-custody wallet | OKX Wallet, built into the main app | Binance Wallet, inside the Binance app | Separate self-custody wallet app |
| Transparency | Recurring proof of reserves with self-verification | Proof of reserves with self-verification | Publicly listed, with audited financial statements |
| Derivatives (where permitted) | Wide range of futures and options | Wide range of futures and options | More limited and region-dependent |
| Beginner friendliness | Moderate; feature-dense | Moderate; feature-dense | High; simple interface |
| Spot fees | 0.08% maker / 0.10% taker (regular tier, checked October 20, 2026) | See Binance's official fee page | See Coinbase's official fee page |
Compare fees on each exchange's own page: OKX fees, the Binance fee schedule and Coinbase fees. Coinbase prices simple buy/sell differently from Advanced trading, so compare the product you will use. For the main alternative, read our Binance review.
Who is OKX best for, and who should avoid it?
OKX suits experienced traders and on-chain users in supported regions who want low base fees and a self-custody wallet in one app. It is a poor fit for US residents seeking the global platform, first-time buyers, and anyone unwilling to manage their own security.
A good fit if you...
- Trade actively and use limit orders to pay the lower maker fee.
- Use DeFi, DEX swaps or NFTs and want exchange and wallet in one place.
- Value proof of reserves and will actually verify your inclusion.
- Are comfortable with 2FA, address whitelists and seed-phrase backups.
- Live in a country where OKX is clearly permitted.
Not a fit if you...
- Live in the US and want OKX.com: it does not serve US residents. Do not route around this with network-masking tools.
- Are a first-time buyer who wants the simplest interface.
- Want leverage without understanding liquidation.
- Expect bank-style protection: exchange balances generally have no deposit insurance.
- Aren't ready to protect a seed phrase or check wallet approvals.
How do we review crypto exchanges?
We review exchanges by reading their official fee, security, transparency and legal pages and explaining what they mean for ordinary users. For this update, we checked the official OKX pages on October 20, 2026 while logged out, and captured the screenshots on this page the same day.
- What we assess: security and transparency (including proof of reserves), regulatory history, regional availability, fees, product range, sign-up and verification, and risk disclosures.
- What we don't do: invent performance figures, simulate personal trading results or promise returns. When we couldn't verify something, we say so.
- Independence and referral disclosure: We use referral links, including for OKX, and may earn a commission. OKX does not review or approve our articles, and commissions don't change our assessment. We give no star rating in this update.
- Updates: Rules, fees and availability change often, so we date every update. Confirm key details on the official site before you act.

OKX frequently asked questions
Do I have to pay tax on crypto I trade on OKX?
Possibly. Tax rules depend on where you live, and in many countries selling, swapping or spending crypto can be taxable. OKX lets you download your transaction history for calculating gains and losses. Using a foreign exchange does not remove local tax obligations.
Can OKX freeze my account?
Yes. Like other exchanges, OKX can restrict or freeze an account during a compliance review, after suspicious activity, or when legally required. Contact support only through the official app or website, and never pay a third party who promises to unlock your account.
How long do OKX crypto withdrawals take?
It depends on the coin and network. Once OKX processes a withdrawal, arrival time mostly depends on chain congestion and the confirmations the receiving platform requires. Some withdrawals are held for extra review. Track the status and transaction ID in your withdrawal history.
How do I contact OKX customer support?
Use the help center or in-app support chat in the official OKX app or website. Start the conversation yourself, and never move it to a personal messaging account.
What is OKB, and do I need it to use OKX?
OKB is the token of the OKX ecosystem. You do not need to hold OKB to sign up, trade or withdraw on OKX. Like any token, its price can fall sharply, so treat it as a speculative asset rather than a requirement.
Is OKX Wallet free to use?
Creating the wallet is free, but on-chain actions cost network (gas) fees, and swaps can include route fees or price impact. Check the full quote, including the minimum amount received, before confirming.
Can I close my OKX account?
Yes. Withdraw all balances, cancel open orders and close positions or earn subscriptions first, then request closure in account settings or through official support. OKX may keep identity and transaction records as anti-money-laundering laws require.
